San Diego Surf would like to officially welcome Alex Walker as our new Girls Zone One Director.

We are thrilled to welcome Alex Walker to Surf’s elite girls coaching staff effective immediately. Alex joins the Surf coaching staff with the primary focus of preparing our U12-U7 girls for the elite Surf pathway to our ECNL and ECNL-R program. Adding Walker to our Girls Zone One program exemplifies our continued commitment to creating the premier youth development environment for girls in the US.

“Part of our continued enhancement plan for our girls’ program, which began in March 2021 with the addition of Andres Deza, was to strengthen all levels of our girls’ side with top coaches. Those coaches also need to be willing to adapt to our new technical direction, and it was clear that Alex Walker is the perfect fit to lead our Zone One program alongside Coach Andy Brookfield. Alex brings a tremendous reputation of developing young players with energy and positivity and wants to continue to challenge himself with new ideas,” said Josh Henderson, Director of Coaching, Surf Soccer Club.

With the addition of Alex Walker, our current Zone One Director, Craig Barclay, who has led the Zone One program for over five years, will transition to work alongside our Technical Director Andres Deza with the ECNL Girls program. Alex will join Coach Andy Brookfield, our Zone One Assistant Director, to lead the Surf Girls Zone One program, prioritizing the physical and technical development while igniting the passion of our youngest players.

“As a club, we are always looking to provide the best of the best in every area for our players. Alex has worked within the 9v9 age group in San Diego over the last eight years and is one of the best coaches around for this age group. Alex brings with him a passion for teaching that supports Surf’s new philosophy that aims to put the individual development of each player at the forefront of teaching. Together with Andy Brookfield working in the 7v7 age groups, we will have the best leadership for our Zone One program and together will continue to create a culture of enjoyment and excellence for our young players,” said Craig Barclay, Lead ECNL Coach, Surf Soccer.

With a resume that includes six years of playing in the Scottish semi-professional league and over eight years of coaching in San Diego, Walker is known for igniting and fueling the passion for soccer with players in Surf’s Zone One age groups. Surf is excited to welcome Alex to our Girls Zone One program and allow him to continue to create the best experiences and opportunities for our players and families.

“I am incredibly excited to be on board and help contribute to our vision of creating the best training and developmental environment in the country. I believe I have the best job in the world working with the 9-12-year-old players as they are in the ‘Golden Stage’ of learning, which is incredibly rewarding. It’s important that we continue to enhance the players love of the game through challenging, enjoyable experiences on the field, working with each player individually to help them become the best possible versions of themselves, turning strengths into ‘super strengths’ and inculcating the hard-working, winning mentality, in combination with positive team culture and collective ethos required for success. I am very thankful to all at Surf for the opportunity and look forward to seeing everybody on the field soon,” said Alex Walker, Zone One Girls Director, Surf Soccer Club.
